ART AROUND THE BEND

Big Bend Arts Council Newsletter for February 2009

The council met on January 18, 2009. Here are the highlights.

Highlights of the last meeting:

Discussion at the January meeting revolved around two main issues: upcoming BBAC shows, and the search for a BBAC sponsored cooperative gallery, followed by show and tell. We also reviewed plans for the February 13th Valentine’s eve reception for our show, "Affordable Art From the Heart," at the Bread and Breakfast restaurant on Holland Ave. in Alpine.Current Show: By the way, every member may have three objets d’art in the February show, "Affordable Art From the Heart." and these may be replaced as sold, so that one may have three at any one time. If you missed the deadline and you now have something to show/sell, take it by Ocotillo Enterprises, 205 N. 5th St. in Alpine, between the hours of 1pm and 5:30pm Wed. thru’ Sat. All works must be ready to hang, and have title, medium, artist’s name, and price affixed to the back. Member’s dues must be paid up, or pay membership of $25. in order to show. Price ceiling is $50.

Upcoming BBAC Shows. In addition to "The Dog Days of Summer" in July, a new show was proposed to include the summer solstice event of Fiesta del Sol. This show is proposed to run from Mid-May through the end of July. In considering a theme for this show it was suggested that we might want to depart from subject themes (such as "Affordable Art from the Heart" or "Dog Days of Summer") for at least some shows, to select elements of art, such as line, color, texture, space, movement, etc. as the theme or focus. For example, a whole show could consist of works in black and white or some other sort of limitation of palette or art element. Members are urged to think about this for the next meeting later this month and come prepared to discuss it. A call for art is postponed until a decision about a theme has been made.BBAC Gallery. We had a gallery on 6th Street for two years, but since then have been unable to locate a suitable successor. Several spots were talked about, and these will be looked into and reported on at the next meeting. Getting our work before the public is a major aspect of our group’s mission, so this is really important. If someone has an idea for such a place, contact Jan Moeller at 837-3050.Show and Tell. Angie Fritz brought a large painting, a portrait, and several drawings with the "heart" theme to show us. (Nancy Whitlock was unable to present her program on framing.) Angie told us how she generally produces lots of work during a short period, then goes for maybe months before another creative urge propels her to produce another series.Don’t Forget the Valentine’s Day Eve Reception and Party! This will be held between 5 and 8(Feb. 13th) at Judy’s Bread and Breakfast. Bring an edible finger food contribution if you can. We hope for a good turnout. Catchlight Gallery will also be having a reception for their February show, "Heartlights," and Curva Grande will also be open that same eveing.

The next BBAC meeting. We will meet again on Sunday (3rd Sunday of each month), February 15th at Kokernot Lodge, Alpine. Board will meet at 1:30pm and all members at 2:00pm. Guests are welcome at meetings, so ask a fellow artist to come along! And members who haven’t come to a meeting for a while, your participation is important and is wanted.

Artists needed for rotating Shows:

BBAC needs artists to sign up for the rotating shows at West Texas National Bank and Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Available months are March, April, May, June, July, August

and September. You may want to consider partnering with another artist (or two) if you do not

have enough items to show. Several artists have sold their work in this venue. Try it! You may like it!

An Interview with Debbie Allison

By Judith BrueskeSurely everyone who has taken time to view Debbie’s new paintings at the temporarily reopened Ashby and Allison Gallery in Alpine has been impressed with the huge change in her work. Because few have had the time or opportunity to ask her all the questions that we may have liked, I took it upon myself to do so, and to share the results of our talk with BBAC newsletter readers.

Debbie’s recent art exhibit was a break from her studies in Santa Fe with artist Tony Ryder. After they closed their gallery in Alpine, Wayne and Debbie took their RV on the road. One of the places they visited was Santa Fe where Keith Williams (formerly of Alpine) had a gallery at which he invited her to exhibit her paintings. (That gallery has since closed, and Debbie has no paintings placed in a Santa Fe gallery at this time.) It was there that she became acquainted with Ryder and his studio. She took four weeks of coursework from him (two weeks drawing and two weeks painting) in the summer of 2007 and decided she wanted to learn more of his traditional style oil technique. She then signed up for a nine-month course, and all her studies have been with Ryder this past year.

The Ryder Studio has two main rooms for painting students, of which there are sixteen. One room has a simulated natural light source, while the other room has a single incandescent light source. The classes run Monday through Friday, with a portrait session in the morning and figure drawing in the afternoon. There are live models all day. Ryder was in the studio most days, and gave demonstrations and critiques. Each student received individual attention, sometimes with mini-demos. She said the experience was sort of like an apprenticeship with one of the old masters. Debbie felt the most significant thing she learned was observation and really studying the live model and learning "how forms turn toward the light." (I interpret this to mean how light subtly models the form of the features.) Also, she felt she learned to appreciate the discipline of working every day for a period of time.

Debbie Allison was by no means an inexperienced artist before this recent course of study. Owning a considerable natural talent, she nonetheless had little formal art school type training. She studied one-on-one for a number of years with an artist in France, learning mostly pastel portraiture and observational drawing. She also took a few workshops in plein air watercolor (painting outdoors in the plain air). But, she says of her studies with Tony Ryder, "This is certainly the most extensive, hardest work I’ve ever done in the art field. [It is] the most disciplined, most consistent."

One of the things she gained from this newer educational experience is learning the importance of simply "taking the time to do the work. I was working very quickly - watercolor encourages that – to work very spontaneously and freshly. The process that Ryder teaches is meticulous and slow, and [working] thoughtfully. It’s being patient with yourself, [saying] ‘I don’t have to rush this – there’s no real time limit on this.’ It’s really focusing and being sure that what you do isn’t haphazard or loose and quick."

Was the cost of her Santa Fe education expensive? Yes, about the same as a year of college. And like college, one needs to regard it as an investment in one’s career.

"The biggest reason in the world I took this class was to strive to paint the best I could possibly paint. And if I couldn’t go any further, that was fine. At least I went as far as I could go."

Debbie added that as artists we need to keep striving, keep improving. "It can’t be just about selling your work. Selling is some confirmation as an artist. But you’ve got to love it." Anyway, now is a difficult time for the art market, so it is a good time to be creating art, working on one’s inventory and worry about the commercial side later.

Debbie will be going back to Santa Fe for another four and a half months of study. She wants to make sure what she has learned will "stick." While she and Wayne are away from Alpine, the gallery will stay open, and Suzie Quiett will be selling her antiques there. Some of Debbie’s work will remain on the walls. Will they come back next summer? "Absolutely! I think the middle of summer and the middle of winter, there’s no place better [than Alpine]."

The council met on December 21, 2009. Here are the highlights:

Gallery Night Show

We had a great show over Gallery Night! Participants in the art show at Judy’s Bread and Breakfast need to pick up their art as soon as possible!

Call for Art:

A new show for February has been planned. The BBAC is soliciting artwork from members with a "heart" theme, not priced over $50.00. The show is called "AFFORDABLE ART FROM THE HEART." The show will run from January 26th – March 13th with a reception February 13th from 5 – 7pm. Artwork can be brought to Ocotillo Enterprises (205 N. 5th St., Alpine) from Jan. 21st - 24th, open 1 – 5:30pm Wed through Saturday. (If you cannot come during these times, please give Judith a call at 837-5353 to arrange a time.)

The Rules: Each member may submit up to 3 pieces of art. No entry fee for members of the BBAC. The BBAC receives a 10% commission for all artwork sold. Artwork must be original and executed without supervision. Work not ready for hanging will be rejected. The show will be at Judy’s Bread and Breakfast. Since the show will be held at a restaurant that is not set up for artwork, any special display requirements must be supplied by the artist. This includes display for jewelry and necessary pedestals. Artwork must stand on its own without decorative accents. For more questions or more information contact: Jan Moeller, 294-3050 or Nancy Whitlock, 837-0128 or visit the website at: www.bigbendartscouncil.com.

About the Reception: It is hoped that as many members as possible can attend the reception, not only those artisits displaying but everyone, so that it can also be a party and potluck for all members to get together. Participants are invited to bring a covered dish. (Check with an or Nancy, above, if you have questions.)

Future Shows:

A summer show was also discussed, with "Dog Days" being suggested, wherein dog-themed art would be the focus. This led naturally to a cat-themed show, too.

More on these shows at the next meeting. There was also a suggestion of an "adopt an artist" plan. More on this later, too.

Artists needed for rotating Shows:

BBAC needs artists to sign up for the rotating shows at West Texas National Bank and Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Available months are February, March, April, May, June, July, August and September. You may want to consider partnering with another artist (or two) if you do not have enough items to show. Several artists have sold their work in this venue. Try it! You may like it!

Show and Tell

After the business part of the meeting Nancy Whitlock gave a preview of her presentation (next time) by showing artwork framed with a linen liner. Judith showed samples of beaded bracelets and small beaded painting she called "whimsies" made with supplies from her store

 .

Next Members’ Meeting:

The next BBAC meeting will be Sunday (3rd Sunday of each month), January 18th at Kokernot Lodge, Alpine. Board will meet at 1:30pm and all members at 2:00pm. Any member can sit in on a board meeting.

Nancy Whitlock will present a program on taking your artwork up to another level – matting and framing your work for a professional look. There will be "show and tell," so bring your current project(s), completed or not, and fresh ideas for the new year!

April 2008

Note from the Editor

Response was terrific this month. So there is a lot of information in this month’s newsletter. Read through the Art Happenings, there are some nifty goings-on starting this week!

The Fiber Fanatics presented some of their work and lots of information at the March meeting. It was a great opportunity to learn about the materials and methods of a variety of textile arts.

This month the BBAC monthly meeting will take place at Gordon Sandborn’s studio; 907 W. Lockhart where he will discuss Lapidary in conjunction with this month’s Gem and Mineral Show.

We are looking for folks to help coordinate the BBAC Fiesta del Sol show. Please help us with this! There are other opportunities for volunteering, so if you are interested, please contact any board member.

Thank you all for sending your events and info! And have a wonderful, artful month!

March 2008

Note from the Editor

March madness! Not just for basketball. Primary elections, Ides of March (beware), Daylight Savings Time, St. Patrick’s Day, the First day of Spring, and Easter. So much going on. And that’s not even mentioning the BBAC monthly meeting and other local events!

Heard good things about Reeda Peel’s presentation. There were about 25 folks who attended last month’s meeting to see her speak. Thank you Reeda! For those of you who didn’t get to attend, there is a synopsis on the BBAC website: www.bigbendartscouncil.com

Those of you keeping track, we are still waiting to hear from the Federal Courthouse about adding them to our rotating show schedule.  We really appreciate all of you participating in the program and hope more of you will take the opportunity to show your work at our local sites.

This newsletter is getting a little thin…please remember that you are the reason it exists and I need your help with art info.

ART WALK 2007 – A Tremendous Success!

“Put Your Best Foot Forward”  -  from Curator Nancy Whitlock

This year’s members’ art show went beautifully.  Thanks to all of us we had a great show.  We had many compliments and a number of artists sold work.  Congratulations to Carol Fairlie who won best of show, Pam Dabney won first place, June Adler won 2nd place, Merrian Sohl won 3rd place and JR Smith won Honorable mention.  Our judge this year was Candice Granger.  She had a very difficult job there were so many great pieces of art.  I want to thank Valerie Richard for the brochure she created and Ginny Brotherton for walking the streets with me, collecting prizes. Also thanks to all the board members who never got tired of my perpetual questions.  Thanks to the PR folks who made sure mention was made in the paper. Thanks also to the volunteers on Gallery Nights; Tim Roberts, Petei Guth, Ginny Brotherton, June Boyd, LaNelle Turner, Angela Fritz, Jean Cargo, Ann-Mary Rodriguez, JR Smith, L.L. Lewallen, Kati Schwartz, and Kelli Fossi.  Also special thanks to our musicians who worked through-out the evenings, Jim Senneff, Robin Campbell, Tim Smith and Marilyn Smith.  Very special thanks to Emmy Holman and all at the Bread and Breakfast!  I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday when they come to pick up their art.  Congrats again on a successful show!

I also wanted to congratulate our youngest new members Ivy Freeland and Brooks Freeland.  Their sculptures;" Horse Grazing", and "Magnolia" received many compliments.  We hope to see more of their art.

Sincerely,  Nancy Whitlock

September 2007

Note from the Editor

School has started and activities are building. Although the September BBAC meeting has been cancelled, it doesn’t mean that nothing is going on. In fact, planning for the 2008 Gallery Night Artwalk is gearing up and there are a number of shows going on. Marfa is excited about the New Tillie Arts and is getting ready for the Chinati Foundation Open House. And there is plenty planned at SRSU! Make sure you get out and support some of these activities.

There is interest in a sub group forming for the jewelry artists. If you would like info, please email info@bigbendartscouncil.com.

The painters would like to restart their paint-outs and portrait studios.

Carol Fairlie is taking care of the website and will be posting frequently. It will be expanded to have images as well. Keep watching this space. www.bigbendartscouncil.com

We are completely dependent on volunteers to help plan and staff events.  If you would like to help, please contact us at info@bigbendartscouncil.org.

Webmaster/Webmistress Needed

Shelley Atwood has resigned from the BBAC board and as Webmistress. Thank you Shelley for the great and hard work during the BBAC’s first years.

If you have Web skills, the BBAC needs you. The Web site is not only the way the public sees what we are doing, but, with distances so great in the area, it’s also how we keep in touch with the nuts and bolts of our work.

Log on to www.bigbendartscouncil.org to check it out and contact Carol Fairlie at fairlie@sulross.edu for more information or to volunteer.

Gallery Night

This year’s Gallery Night will take place on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18.

BBAC Music Coordinator, Jim Senneff, is also the Entertainment Coordinator for Gallery Night. Both Jim and Robin Campbell have been lining up area musicians for the Friday and Saturday night performances (after 5:00 p.m.).  Two stages will be set up, one at Kiowa Plaza and one at the Railroad Depot parking lot.

Jim and Robin are still looking for volunteer performers who would like to participate (mime, dance, theater, music, etc.) on Saturday afternoon from 12 to 5 p.m.  If you know anyone who is interested, please have them contact Jim at 837-8007 (work), 364-2319 (home), 386-3182 (cell), e-mail: jsenneff@sulross.edu, or Robin at 294-3000

Visual artists will show at the Bread and Breakfast Restaurant. This will be a landscape show, which will also serve as our annual membership drive. Contact Carol Fairlie for details.

August 2007

Note from the Editor

You may think that because it is summer, life slows down. While this may be true in some respects, it is not so in the art world. There are lots of shows, activities and classes going on in and around the area. And the planning for Gallery Night Artwalk 2007 has started!

The BBAC is working to share event and happening information with its members, the media and the chambers of commerce. This newsletter is one avenue and soon the website will be an active source of information. As you have information to share, please send it to me at clineandallison@aol.com or call 432-386-6278.

We are completely dependent on volunteers to help plan and staff events. If you would like to help, please contact us at info@bigbendartscouncil.org. We are very pleased that the website, www.bigbendartscouncil.org will be up and running soon. Please check it out often!

Don’t forget to plan to join us at the strategic planning meeting on September 15 from 10am to 2pm in the Rio Grande Room at the Historic Holland Hotel in Alpine.

ART WALK 2007 – November 16 & 17

BBAC would like to participate in this event as a sanctioned art show, which means we get listed on the events and postcards, etc that are sent out for Gallery Night. We usually send in our money (it is 125.00 for the non-profit) and then start planning our event, send out the call for art, etc. We have received a limited response for our call for volunteers and must have a curator to coordinate the BBAC show.

We need the following volunteers (Last year's member's exhibition committee will be able to help with any questions, you would not be in this alone.):

1. Someone to co-ordinate the show and handle questions concerning the show.(the Curator)

2. Someone to co-ordinate the mailings, press releases and show announcements (publicist)

3. Someone to work with the curator & publicist and handle questions about the show (co-Curator)

4. Someone to co-ordinate finding the people to take in entries, help hang the show, to work with the reception coordinator, help with take down and calling artists. (volunteer coordinator):

5. Someone in charge of hanging/installing the artwork.

6. A reception coordinator.

Carol, Tim, Virginia, Charlotte, Terry, Jim and Jan are willing to assist this year’s volunteers.

If we do not get enough volunteers, we may not have a member's show this year. This decision needs to be made before August 10th so please reply quickly to Jan Moeller-837-0207 work, 294-3050 cell.

Art Around the Bend

A monthly newsletter

from the

Big Bend Arts Council

The future of the council

When the BBAC gallery on 6th Street was sold in February, we had shows booked through the middle of May. But it seemed prudent, with our low budget and lack of volunteers, to give the space up after the Hispanic Heritage Exhibition.

It was hard to see all of our work come to an end there, but just as that opportunity fell in our lap, other opportunities will hopefully follow. We have been offered a few venues to exhibit in, and we are actively keeping our eyes open for more.

We will still plan to have a member's exhibition for Gallery Night and juried exhibitions in the late summer-early fall. We would like to hold a portrait painting day once a month and perhaps some more 2-hour landscape paint-outs.

We are also interested in presenting more evenings of musical performances and are looking at venues in which to hold them.

All in all, we have made great strides in the last 15 months and need member input on the direction you would like to see us move in the future.

Shelley Atwood, our web-mistress has set up an internet forum on Yahoo for members to share ideas with other members as well as board members. See the item further along in this newsletter about how to join the group.

Contact me at 432.837.1169 if you want to volunteer to help paint a mural in the pediatric recovery room at Big Bend Regional Medical Center. We will have paint-in days in early August. We will need folks who can do "color by number" style fill in painting and then detail's and paint mixers to come in after them. We will be working in the late afternoons and early evenings when room usage is at it lowest. -- Carol Fairlie

Exhibition opportunity
The Big Bend Arts Council (BBAC) and the West Texas National Bank (WTNB) are working together to provide exhibit space for BBAC member artists. Artists may select a month to show their work on a first come, first served basis by calling Ray Esposito at 432.837.3859.  Ray is coordinating the program with WTNB. While every effort will be made to avoid damage to the art, each artist is asked to sign a combined hold harmless agreement for WTNB and BBAC as neither can accept responsibility for damage to any work. Click the following two links for and print out the agreements if you would like to exhibit at the bank: http://www.bigbendartscouncil.org/BBACTravelingExhibitGuidelines.doc and http://www.bigbendartscouncil.org/West Texas National Bank Release.doc
Procedure is simple: On the 1st of the month (or the following Monday if the 1st is on a Sunday) after 3 p.m., WTNB will provide thirteen easels for artists to display their work. The bank will place the easels so that the art work is highly visible but also so that banking services will not be interrupted. On the last day of the month, the artist will pick up their art after 3 p.m. making room for the next artist the next day.
Artists are responsible for setting up and taking down their art according to the procedure established by the BBAC and WTNB. Art that is not picked up will be removed by volunteers and there is no guarantee against damage. Ray Esposito will try to be there for every set up, but he cannot guarantee that he will be there.

Those wishing to sell their art or have members of the public contact them should clearly label each piece with a price and provide business cards so that viewers may easily obtain the artist’s contact information.

Ray looks forward to having a number of places for members to show their work, hopefully rotating through the area for greatest visibility.

Big Bend Galleries and Artists Guide
